College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

March 17, 2008

Present: Dale McFadden (chair), Deb Cohn, Sandy Dolby, Hal Evans, Jeff Hart (recorder), and Maxine Watson.

The meeting began at 4:00pm.

The committee discussed briefly two future agenda items: formulating a new policy on the composition of the College tenure and promotion committees and a draft report on the status of disability services at IU Bloomington.  Another future agenda item may be policies for joint hires in the college.

The Dean arrived at 4:15pm. Dean Bertenthal was somewhat dissatisfied with the budget meetings this semester in that he hoped that more chairs would understand the College’s budgetary constraints and would use their planning documents to explain departmental priorities.  While the College would probably not face cutbacks this year, it anticipates a major budget shortfall given that the expected revenue will not be sufficient to cover all existing commitments.

The Dean stated that he intended to create a long-term strategic plan for the College.  He was considering appointing a committee to help him do this.

The Dean provided the committee with an update of plans for the new international studies building.

The Dean left the meeting at 5:30pm.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:45pm.

Jeff Hart, Recorder
