Present: Dale McFadden (chair), Tom Busey, Nick Cullather, Deborah Cohn, Sandra Dolby, Hal Evans, Jeff Hart (recorder), Brian Steensland, and Maxine Watson.

The meeting began at 4:00pm. The Dean did not attend this meeting.

The initial discussion concerned annual budget meetings with chairs and directors. Three members of the committee had attended one such meeting each prior to this meeting. The committee learned that planning documents prepared for the meetings were 10-20 pages long. The College was represented at these meetings by Dean Bertenthal, Executive Associate Dean Bob Becker, and Chris Puckett, Director of Budgetary Administration. Ms. Puckett compiled statistics for each department or program and presented these to the chair or director at the beginning of the meeting.

Members of the College Policy Committee attend these meetings in order to inform themselves about policy-related issues facing departments and programs within the College. Some issues that emerged from the three budget meetings were the use of non-tenure-track (NTT) faculty to meet the demand for certain required courses, the need for better coordination between the College and departments or programs with regard to development activities, memoranda of understanding in joint hires, and the general shortage of useable real estate in the College, including limits on available office space for newly hired professors.

Budget meetings will continue through the end of February.

The meeting concluded with a brief discussion of possible agenda items for the Spring semester.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:30pm.
