College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes
December 11th, 2006
Present: Judith Anderson (Chair), Tom Busey, Sandra Dolby, Hal Evans, Roger Levesque (Recorder), Rosemary Lloyd, Patrick McNaughton,
and Pamela Walters.
The meeting was convened at 4:28 pm.
We discussed and approved, with a minor amendment, the minutes from our December 4th meeting.
We returned to our revised drafts of the policy on non-tenure-track (NTT) appointments and our new Policy on Instructional Reporting. We already had approved both drafts but now await their review by our new Dean, Bennett Bertenthal, to whom we shall send them in the Spring term.
CPC members who had attended the Chairs and Directors’ Meeting reported on it. Much of the meeting had been led by the Office of International Services. That discussion had centered on various levels of visas for faculty as well as students. Chairs and Directors were provided with important handouts that describe a wide variety of issues relating to visas and residence. Before that discussion, Dean Zaret had made a series of general announcements. We learned, again, that the College is facing formidable budgetary challenges. For example, the University will tax units at a higher rate, which will result in the College’s losing control over more of its income. We also learned that the College has fine-tuned a new practice document that delineates the rights of graduate students in need of family and medical leave. The College has modeled graduate students’ protections on those of faculty. A new Bureau of Social Science Research has been established at IU; Scott Long, the former Chair of Sociology, will serve as its first director. Lastly, several new degrees have been approved and tenure and promotion reviews are moving forward as planned.
We spent much of our time revising the Policy on Restructuring, Merging, and Eliminating an Existing Academic Unit. We are satisfied with our current draft and will send it to Dean Bertenthal for his comments.
We revised the home page of our Website and will send our suggestions to the College.
Our eagerness to continue revising more policies and work with our new Dean led us to decide that we will meet the first day of next semester, January 8th.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:16.
Roger Levesque, Recorder
