College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

November 13, 2003

Present: Erik Bucy, Roy Gardner, Kevin Hunt (chair), Chuck Livingston (recorder), Al Ruesink, Rob Shakespeare

1. The meeting began at 4:00 PM with the approval of the minutes of November 6, as amended.

2. A College departmental chair has raised concerns regarding state-mandated course articulation. The possibility exists that courses satisfying College requirements will be offered in Bloomington by the community college system. In particular, students may be able to complete fundamental skills requirements in writing, foreign language, and mathematics, at a community college in Bloomington while enrolled and taking courses at IU Bloomington. Means of assuring that such courses meet the expectations of the College requirements are necessary.

Issues related to articulation are now being discussed at all levels of the University. The CPC will continue to discuss articulation with Catherine Larson, Dean for Undergraduate Education.

3. The Committee held preliminary discussion on its evaluation of the possible transfer of the Department of Computer Science to the School of Informatics. Members of the CPC are now reviewing the report of the Chancellor's committee that assessed and recommended the transfer. Dean Subbaswamy is analyzing the impact with regards to the budget and Associate Dean Larson will be asked to keep the CPC up-to-date on her continuing review of the impact of such a transfer on undergraduate education in the College.

4. The meeting concluded at 5:30 PM.

Questions or comments regarding the minutes and actions of the Policy Committee may be addressed to Kevin Hunt 5-3857, Dept. of Anthropology, Student Building 248, khunt@indiana.edu.
