College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes
November 6, 2003
Present: Erik Bucy, Ellen Dwyer, Katy Fraser, Kevin Hunt (chair), Chuck Livingston (recorder), Al Ruesink, Rob Shakespeare
1. The meeting began at 4:00 PM with the approval of the minutes of October 30, as amended.
2. It has been announced that Michael McGerr will be stepping down as Associate Dean for the College. A discussion ensued on the selection process for associate deans and the role of the CPC in this process. The subject will be further discussed with Dean Subbaswamy.
3. Last year the CPC passed its policy on "Expectations of Faculty When on Release Time from Teaching (April 18, 2003)," stating in part that "unless on funded research leave, Leave Without Pay or sabbatical, faculty who are not engaged in teaching courses are expected to maintain a presence on campus in order to perform their other faculty duties." Issues relating to the implementation of that policy, differences between departments in how it will be implemented, and the role of the College in the implementation, were discussed.
4. Consideration of the proposal for an Eighteenth-Century Program led to a discussion of the general process for the development and approval of programs in the College. Any such proposal should include the academic justification for the proposal (in the context of and in relation to the College), and should clearly describe the scope of the program, educational aspects of the program, essential administrative features, and budgetary matters. The Committee is supportive of the Eighteenth-Century proposal and has assembled a list of questions regarding it in order to resolve the procedural issues expeditiously.
5. The Chancellor's Assessment Committee for the move of Computer Science to Informatics has issued its report. The CPC will now begin its review of the implications and impact on the College of such a move. Dean Subbaswamy has informed the committee of his concerns regarding the budgetary impact of such a move and he will monitor this carefully. Associate Dean Larson is exploring the effect on undergraduate education. The report of the Chancellor's Assessment Committee is available at this time at: http://www.indiana.edu/~college/faculty/policy/minutes/CS-INFO-Assessment-final2.pdf.
