College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes
November 1, 2004
Present: Rob Shakespeare (chair), Judith Anderson, Katy Fraser, Jeff Hart, Kevin Hunt, Chuck Livingston, Al Ruesink (recorder), Pam Walters
The meeting convened at 2:30.
Minutes of the meeting of October 25 were amended and approved.
Building on our prior discussions regarding selection of Ruth Halls Professors, the CPC considered some models for periodic faculty screening to identify the most appropriate candidates for this recognition and for others. Judith was asked to put a proposal on
paper for a future discussion.
Because Dean Widlanski has agreed to consider any problems with IU's institutional support for procuring or using research funds, we ask by these minutes that anyone who has experienced particular problems send a short statement to Rob (see address below).
Chuck reported on the College CUE (Committee on Undergraduate
Education) meeting of Friday, October 29. One topic of particular concern is the apparent increase in student plagiarism, an issue that Dean Larson and the CUE plan to investigate this semester.
Several members of the CPC are concerned about gender equity issues at IUB, issues that go beyond simple financial differences. There seems to be some lack of data to use in making judgments, and this is a case where the new, improved office of institutional research being proposed and promoted by President Herbert might facilitate real improvements in decision-making. Perhaps a task force to look at gender equity issues and equity issues generally would be useful, but we agreed that we should talk with Swamy and some persons involved in making past equity adjustments before proceeding.
There was a short discussion of IUB's support for spousal hires or other spousal accommodations, enough to make it clear that some departments have their own policies, that some individuals feel IUB should be doing more, and that we need more information about the present situation before deciding whether any College policies need to be altered.
The meeting adjourned at 4:00.
Albert Ruesink, recorder
