College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

October 23rd, 2006

Present: Judith Anderson (Chair), Tom Busey, Simon Brassell, Sandra Dolby, Hal Evans, Roger Levesque (Recorder) and Rosemary Lloyd.

The meeting was convened at 4:13 pm.

We discussed and approved, with one minor amendment, the minutes of our October 16th meeting.

Judith briefed us on more responses from administrators who had received her letters and statements detailing the core values of the humanities. We found the responses quite thoughtful and encouraging. We have set meetings to discuss the statements with administrators interested in pursuing more concrete steps to bolster the recognition of, and support for, the Humanities.

We again returned to our policy dealing with departmental faculty governance. We finalized our first draft of what we expect will be two policies, one dealing with the suspension of faculty governance and another dealing with the appointment and tenure of department chairs and program directors. We forwarded our drafts to David Zaret for comment and hope to send them soon to all College faculty for comment.

We again revisited the policies concerning clinical faculty and non-tenure track faculty categories of Lecturer and Senior Lecturer. We again were struck by the immensity of the task and the many levels of complexities. Among important issues we must now consider is how we can comply with the BFC April 2, 2002 Policies for Lecturer and Clinical Appointments that states, for example, that "each campus school and unit within a school shall specify the minimum percentage of its faculty appointments that must be assigned to tenured and tenure probationary faculty appointments in order to sustain its research, teaching, and service missions." When setting a percentage, our own policies now seem to refer to total College FTE’s rather than to units within the College. We expect that it will take us considerable time to work through these issues.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:07.

Roger Levesque, Recorder
