College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

October 21, 2005

Present: Rob Shakespeare (chair), Judith Anderson, Bob Becker, Tom Busey, Roger Levesque, Rosemary Lloyd, Al Ruesink (recorder), and Rick Van Kooten.

The meeting convened at 2:00.

Minutes of the meeting of October 14 were approved unanimously after a helpful URL was added.

Rob announced that the membership on the Class Scheduling Task Force is almost complete and Dean Catherine Larson will convene it soon.

Rob updated us on his information gathering regarding the transfer of an individual from one department to another.

Tom and Rick briefed us on the content of the College Chairs and Directors Meeting that they recently attended on our behalf. Much of it was devoted to consideration of the recently released Report of the Chancellor's Enrollment Committee. Some attention was also paid to the optimization of basic hiring strategies, a proposed new way of categorizing PA's that will be pilot tested soon, the deliberations by the College CUE (Committee on Undergraduate Education) on distance learning, and graduate recruitment.

For the remaining hour, we worked our way through reports of the subcommittees that have been studying the 31 CPC Policy Statements that are posted on the College website. We got through all of them on a first pass. Some are fine, some need minor tweaking to improve them, some need major attention, and some are no longer pertinent. Rob asked each of the four subcommittees to bring one policy to the meeting next week for focussed attention regarding improving it.

The meeting adjourned at 3:50.

Albert Ruesink, recorder
