College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

October 9th, 2006

Present: Judith Anderson (Chair), Simon Brassell, Sandra Dolby, Hal Evans, Roger Levesque (Recorder), Rosemary Lloyd, Patrick McNaughton, and Pamela Walters

The meeting was convened at 4:15 pm.

We briefly discussed, slightly modified, and then approved the previous week’s minutes.

We returned to discuss the development of statements that detail the core values of the Humanities. We again made minor modifications and now consider the statements done. The statements are being distributed to appropriate College and university administrators.

We returned to discuss the contents of a recent UITS Monitor (September 20, 2006) that was widely distributed. We had been particularly concerned about the section entitled "You don’t need to print those eReserves". We found the UITS website version of the circulated document less insensitive to, and indeed more careful of, faculty governance of academic requirements and guidelines for courses. At the same time, we remain concerned about interference of this sort from technological facilitators. We consider barring further problems.

We were quite pleased to have received excellent faculty feedback on our proposed revision of the Policy on the Evaluation of Classroom Teaching. We carefully considered all suggestions and made revisions to enhance clarity. The policy will soon be posted on our website and will be titled Policy on the Evaluation of Pedagogical Practices.

We returned to our policy dealing with departmental faculty governance. We struggled with the need to distinguish faculty governance from the responsibilities of department chairs. We are attempting to define the type of faculty governance that would be subject to our policies and are seeking to identify procedures that departments must follow when they nominate chair candidates.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:51.

Roger Levesque, Recorder
