College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

September 30, 2005

Present: Rob Shakespeare (chair), Judith Anderson, Tom Busey, Sandra Dolby, Roger Levesque, Rosemary Lloyd, Al Ruesink (recorder), and Rick Van Kooten.

The meeting convened at 2:00.

The minutes of September 23 were approved unanimously after a small change.

Rob reported that he had sent a second e-mail to President Herbert regarding the involvement of the CPC in the final stages of screening for a new Campus Chancellor, but he had still not received any response. [On Tuesday, Oct. 4, he did respond by e-mail indicating that it would not be possible for the CPC to be involved in the vetting process, but that faculty were capably involved as a majority of the search committee and on the BFC Agenda Committee, which is involved.] Unable to join us last week, University Counsel Kiply Drew is now scheduled to attend our October 7 meeting to help us understand possible legal issues relating to the 31 recent CPC Policy statements that now exist. We are especially concerned about those statements relating to promotion and tenure and faculty retention. Next Rob gathered information from CPC members regarding how much a hardcopy schedule of classes is needed and what minimal information should be included in it. He and others from the College were meeting with Roland Cote (Registrar) immediately after our CPC meeting to discuss the situation. The CPC looked at a summary prepared by Judith of definitions of such words as "policy" and "guideline" and "recommendation" as we prepared to look harder at the 31 recent CPC policy statements.

At 2:45 we were joined by Dean Swamy who noted that he had received a report from a special committee considering the need for a humanities building. An outside review team has visited campus to give advice on implementing the new Department of Statistics and will be reporting soon. Swamy and the CPC discussed some of the major points of President Herbert's State of the University speech, considering especially the implications for the College. To enhance our position as the major public liberal arts institution in the state, Swamy believes that it is necessary for the Arts and Humanities faculty to project better the new and exciting developments in their areas, both in seeking funding from outside campus and in promoting their case for space and support on campus. Swamy left our meeting at 3:28.

The CPC, noting that much of the CTE funding has been directed to science areas, briefly discussed how the Arts and Humanities might be bolstered by specific activities designed to support A&H programs.

The meeting adjourned at 3:40.

Albert Ruesink, recorder
