College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

September 27, 2004

Present: Rob Shakespeare (chair), Judith Anderson, Erik Bucy, Katy Fraser, Chuck Livingston, Al Ruesink (recorder), Pam Walters

The meeting convened at 2:30.

For the first half, we discussed the results of a meeting that chair Rob recently had with Dean Swamy to consider potential topics for the CPC agenda this year. Swamy will be meeting with us on October 4th and we expect to continue that discussion as a whole group. Our minutes of October 4th should include some information about topics near the top of the list.

Minutes of the meeting on Sept. 20th were amended and approved.

Jeff Hart has chaired a subcommittee of the CPC that is working on potential questions to go on the survey of College faculty that will be undertaken as part of the regular fifth-year review of Dean Subbaswamy.

We reviewed the work of that subcommittee, suggesting some changes in both the portion of the survey that is supposedly generic and the portion that is to be generated by the CPC. Our goal was to seek both clarity and focus. The comments were sent back to the subcommittee, who will try to get answers to some issues raised by CPC members. The revised questions should be circulated to CPC members before the October 4th meeting and we expect to complete work on the survey questions on that day. The CPC feels that the survey should go to both regular faculty and non-tenure-track faculty, but that their responses should be analyzed separately. There was general agreement that the professional staff should also be surveyed, probably with a different survey document.

The meeting adjourned at 4:00.

Albert Ruesink, recorder
