Present: Erik Bucy, Ellen Dwyer, Katy Fraser, Roy Gardner, Susan Gubar, Kevin Hunt (chair), Chuck Livingston (recorder), Al Ruesink, Rob Shakespeare

1. The meeting began at 4:00 PM with the approval of the minutes of September 4, as amended.

2. The committee discussed Dean Subbaswamy's dismissal of Professor Stanfield as chair of African American and African Diaspora Studies and the Dean's appointment of Associate Dean McGerr as interim chair. The Policy Committee is considering whether the Dean's actions in this case were consistent with the College's Policy on Suspension and Restoration of Faculty Governance in Departments (21 November 1996) and in particular whether actions by the Dean interfered with any aspect of faculty governance in the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies. The committee will continue to discuss this and related matters.

3. The Policy Committee is considering agenda items for 2003-2004:

• The Committee solicits suggestions for its agenda from all College faculty. Suggestions should be addressed to the Chair, Kevin Hunt.



• The Committee will invite Catherine Larson, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, to an upcoming meeting to discuss her priorities. The Policy Committee continues to be concerned with academic standards and enrollment issues. Also, it will seek her assessment of the impact of the possible transfer of the Department of Computer Science to the School of Informatics.



• The Dean has listed as a goal for the coming year a College-wide discussion of tenure criteria, with particular emphasis on the role of teaching effectiveness.
