Present: Ellen Dwyer (acting chair), Katy Fraser, Susan Gubar, Al Ruesink, Rob Shakespeare, Erik Bucy (recorder)

1. The meeting began at 4:00 PM with a discussion of the replacement of Professor John Stanfield as Chair of the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies. The Committee explored whether there were policy implications of the action and considered Professor Stanfield's memo to the Committee dated 9/3/03.

2. At 5:00 PM Dean Subbaswamy joined the meeting and answered the Committee's questions about Professor Stanfield's replacement. The Dean left the meeting at 5:30 PM.

3. After due consideration, the Committee decided to draft a response to Professor Stanfield. Before doing so, the Committee decided to take up the issue at next week's meeting when all members of the Committee would be present.

4. The meeting concluded at 5:40pm.
