College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes
August 26, 2005
Present: Rob Shakespeare (chair), Judith Anderson, Bob Becker, Tom Busey, Sandra Dolby, Roger Levesque, Rosemary Lloyd, and Al Ruesink (recorder).
The meeting convened at 2:00.
Minutes of the meeting of May 11 were approved unanimously.
Rob announced that because of some exciting professional opportunities, he would like to resign from the CPC chair for the spring semester, though he will be happy to remain on the CPC. Later in the fall we will make some leadership decisions for spring.
We looked quickly at some of the major issues to consider during the fall semester:
1. The campus will be considering changes in the General Education Requirements for students, which will clearly affect the College, and we wish to be involved in that consideration.
2. Because there are some problems when trying to apply College Tenure and Promotion guidelines to faculty holding joint appointments between the College and a center or between the College and another school, the CPC will work with Dean Swamy to enhance present P&T policy.
3. Swamy wants something more from the CPC regarding salary policies when the College is considering counteroffers for faculty who propose to go on leave.
4. Finally, Rob distributed a list of the 31 CPC policy documents posted on our committee website and we agreed that reviewing these documents and reorganizing their posting would be desirable.
Sandy Dolby and Roger Levesque reported on their attendance at the College Chairs and Directors Retreat on August 18. Much of the retreat was standard orientation and updating fare for unit leaders, but substantial time was devoted to the issue of campus General Education requirements. Another major issue for discussion was the CPC document of last spring titled Gender Bias and the Faculty Gender Gap:Implications and Recommendations for the College of Arts and Sciences.
Rob asked us to do two pieces of homework: 1) read the document prepared by Dean Catherine Larson titled "Brief History of General Education Discussion at IUB" and 2) develop logical groupings of the 31 CPC policy documents that are posted chronologically on the website.
The meeting adjourned at 3:05.
Albert Ruesink, recorder
