Policy Committee Minutes: June 30, 2000

Present: Julia Bondanella, Geoffrey Conrad (Chair), James Craig, Dan Dinnsen, Alex Dzierba, Tom Gieryn, Steven Girvin, Noretta Koertge, Elizabeth Raff, Ted Widlanski

1. The minutes for June 16 were approved as amended.

2. We discussed briefly the policy implications of the College's investigation of possible tampering with a tenure dossier. Questions raised included methods of administering course evaluations, ways of insuring proper evaluation and ways of protecting the results.

3. Completing our efforts to gain relevant background information on NELC and the related proposal for the formation of a new Near East Institute, we met with Professor Suzanne Stetkevych, former chair of NELC. Some of the central issues discussed concerned the importance of the department to its faculty, the College, its alumni and its current students, the lack of a tradition of faculty governance and the absence of procedures for faculty governance, the degree of faculty involvement in the selection of chairs, the relative strength of the Hebrew and Arabic language programs, recent recruitment of graduate students, and faculty who remain committed to Near Eastern Studies.

We plan to complete our deliberations and make a recommendation to the Dean about NELC by mid July.

4. The summer meeting schedule is as follows: July 7, July 14, and July 28.

5. A brief discussion of the search for the new Chancellor addressed issues of importance to the College, including the desirability of finding an administrator who has strong scholarly credentials, an ability to work with faculty, administrators, students and others in the state, and an appreciation of the organization of this campus (into a large college and various schools), which differs in significant ways from other research institutions.

6. Professor Michael McGerr (History) has been selected as the new Associate Dean for Graduate Education.

7. The College Policy Committee agreed to formulate a resolution on academic freedom.

The meeting adjourned at 10:50 a.m.

Questions or comments regarding the minutes and actions of the Policy Committee may be addressed to Geoff Conrad, 855-5340, Mathers Museum, 601 East Eighth Street, conrad@indiana.edu.
