Policy Committee Minutes: May 5, 2000
Present: Geoff Conrad (Chair), James Craig, Daniel Dinnsen, Alex Dzierba,
Steven Girvin, Dale McFadden, Elizabeth Raff, Ted Widlanski
1. Two of the new members, Alex Dzierba (Physics) and Ted Widlanski (Chemistry) were introduced.
2. We will distribute the minutes of April 21 as soon as clarification of two points is received.
3. Geoffrey Conrad was unanimously reelected as Chair of the Committee and Julia Bondanella was unanimously reelected (in absentia) Secretary for 2000-2001. The committee congratulated and thanked them for their excellent work this past year.
4. The next meeting was scheduled for 1:30pm on Friday, May 19. The committee will continue to meet sporadically through the summer, as needed.
5. For the benefit of the new members, the committee reviewed the situation in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Culture.
6. Dean Hanson joined the meeting at 2:00pm and the discussion of NELC continued. Hanson reported that the Trustees had approved the tenure of John Walbridge. Without going into specifics, Hanson said that the investigation of the alleged tampering with Walbridge's teaching evaluations is still underway. The committee requested a copy of the CIP report on NELC. The future status of the department, the possible formation of an Institute, and possible mechanisms for helping the department become functional again occupied the remainder of the discussion.
7. Discussion of the plan to create a joint PhD/DBA program involving the Departments of Economics (COAS) and Business Economics and Public Policy (Kelley School of Business) was put off until the next meeting.
8. The committee moved forward with plans to post on its web site examples of salary policies from a variety of COAS departments. This will be done shortly.
The meeting adjourned at 3:06pm.
