College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

May 4, 2006

[Note: A proposed revision of a CPC Policy is located at the end of these minutes.]

Present: Judith Anderson (chair), Simon Brassell (new member), Sandra Dolby, Hal Evans (new member), Roger Levesque, Patrick McNaughton (new member), and Al Ruesink (recorder).

The meeting convened at 4:15.

The minutes of the meeting of April 27 were approved unanimously following some amending.

Those CPC members continuing next year and starting next year (i.e. everyone present except Al) elected the leadership for next year, starting June 1. While Roger stepped out, he was unanimously elected as recorder, and while Judith stepped out, she was unanimously elected as chair.

There was preliminary discussion of the best time for CPC meetings in the fall semester. Conclusion: It will be difficult to find a time suitable for everyone.

Much of the meeting was devoted to formulating questions for our interviews with the three Dean candidates during the next two weeks. Judith will take our ideas and develop a list of about ten questions that we will use as a basis for our conversation with each of them.

We continued our work on evaluating and revising some of the CPC Policies of the last 20 years. We agreed that the "Policy on expectations of faculty when on release time from teaching--2003" is now ready to send to faculty.

The meeting adjourned at 6:00.

Albert Ruesink, recorder

Policy Documents

The following document represents a draft revision of a CPC Policy Document of recent years. The CPC worked on it, submitted it to Dean Swamy and transition team leader Zaret for suggestions, and now circulates it for faculty comments. For the original version, see the CPC Policy Document site: http://www.indiana.edu/~college/faculty/policy/policies.shtml . Responses about the document should be sent to Judith Anderson (anders@indiana.edu) , our CPC chair.

Policy Regarding Expectations of Tenured Faculty (January 12, 1995; revised May 4, 2006)

The College of Arts and Sciences expects that each of its tenured faculty members will:

-- Maintain and sustain an agenda of significant research or creative activity as defined by the norms and standards of the faculty member's discipline. This agenda should result, within a time frame appropriate to the discipline, either in publication, exhibition, or performance, or (in some cases) in demonstrable progress toward such productivity;

-- Carry out effective teaching of high quality in the normal range and number of courses expected in his or her department, along with other customary and appropriate teaching and mentoring activities such as student advising and supervision of independent learning and research;

-- Perform effectively the normal service activities for the department, University, and profession.

As with the expectations for tenure and promotion, the College looks for a pattern of productivity in these three areas of faculty activity.

The goal is to bring out the best in each College faculty member. It is expected that departments will make every effort to reward strong achievement in any of these areas. If a tenured faculty member is not fulfilling expectations in one of these areas, steps will be taken to help remedy the situation or to restructure the faculty member's responsibilities, consistent with University policy on the rights of tenured faculty members (see ; once connected, select Document I-I: Code of Academic Ethics).
