Policy Committee Minutes: April 28, 2000

Present: Julia Bondanella, Geoffrey Conrad, James Craig, Dan Dinnsen, Steven Girvin, Noretta Koertge, Elinor Ostrom, Elizabeth Raff

1. The minutes of 14 April were approved.

2. The minutes of 21 April were approved as amended.

3. We discussed nominations for the Associate Deanship for Undergraduate Education in COAS.

4. We continued to discuss the situation surrounding NELC, including the formation of an institute and the conditions in the department. We discussed the case of apparent tampering with class evaluations, and although it concerns us, it does not lie within our purview at this time. The external reviewers of the department unanimously favored the creation of a Near Eastern Institute but were not unanimous about the fate of the department. We shall formulate a recommendation based on CPC policy.

(1) The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures will not be disbanded without due process based on policy documents, including the "COAS Policy Committee Policy on Suspension and Restoration of Faculty Governance in Departments" (21 November 1996) and the "Policy for the Restructuring, Merging or Elimination of an Existing Academic Unit" (22 January 1999). These documents can be found on the CPC web site noted below.

(2) We have approved the transfers of three faculty members to other departments but do not anticipate approving further transfers until the status of NELC has been determined.

(3) Conversations about an institute should not be taken as a sign that the department will be eliminated.

The meeting adjourned at 3:05
