Policy Committee Minutes: April 14, 2000

Present: Julia Bondanella, Geoffrey Conrad, James Craig, Dan Dinnsen, Steven Girvin, Noretta Koertge, Dale McFadden, Elinor Ostrom, Elizabeth Raff

1. The minutes were approved as amended.

2. Elections results were reviewed. Alex Dzierba (Physics), James Franklin (Classical Studies), Tom Gieryn (Sociology), Susan Gubar (English), and Ted Widlanski (Chemistry) were elected to the Policy Committee for three-year terms.

3. We are delighted with Dean Subbaswamy's response to our letter of welcome and look forward to meeting with him as soon as possible during the summer months. We are beginning to develop an agenda for next year, and we wish to identify some ideas of mutual concern.

4. The Policy Committee strongly supports the Survey on Academic Incivility at Indiana University being conducted by the Center for Survey Research, but notes that since it is directed entirely toward teachers (faculty and associate instructors) and issues of classroom climate, it does not include student perspectives about their experiences on campus. The Policy Committee affirms the importance of civility, tolerance and mutual understanding in all aspects of university life, not merely in the classroom, but also in other arenas, on the part of all members of the IU community.

5. The Policy Committee discussed the proposals concerning NELC within the context of the CPC's policy concerning the disbanding or reorganization of departments and programs. It will continue to make queries and study the situation.

6. The Policy Committee discussed some issues concerning higher education in the State of Indiana as well as several local concerns, including the role of the College in general education and the review of RCM.

Questions or comments regarding the minutes and actions of the Policy Committee may be addressed to Geoff Conrad, 855-5340, Mathers Museum, 601 East Eighth Street, conrad@indiana.edu.

Submitted,

Julia Conaway Bondanella
