Policy Committee Minutes: March 31, 2000
Present: Julia Bondanella, Geoff Conrad, James Craig, Dan Dinnsen, Steve Girvin, Elinor Olstrom, Beth Raff
1. The minutes were approved as amended.
2. Next week will be the last week for voting in the Policy Committee elections. The voting period ends on April 7, 2000. It was noted that it is possible for an individual to vote more than once, if he or she has a change of mind, with only the last vote counting.
3. The Committee reviewed the schedule for the remaining budget conferences.
4. The Committee discussed at some length its recommendations to the Dean concerning the request by the Gender Studies Program for departmental status. The recommendations will be presented to the Dean next week.
5. The Committee discussed its enthusiastic support for all efforts to provide additional funding for graduate support and to recruit the best students. The need for statistics on the quality of graduate students receiving Chancellor's Fellowships who actually enroll as well as comparative statistics from previous years was noted.
6. The Committee discussed some space issues, including the size of the new science building and the idea of moving some research units to Eigenman Hall. Some members noted that it is problematic to separate research facilities from the areas where faculty, graduate students and undergraduates involved in research, attend classes, participate in lectures and symposia, and hold or attend office hours.
7. Since the Committee had requested to have a copy of each department or program's salary policies along with the budgetary materials prior to each budget conference, the members decided to look into the possibility of posting sample salary policies on the CPC Web site.
8. Several additional issues were discussed surrounding the fiscal environment on the Bloomington campus and the question of mounting assessments.
The meeting adjourned at 2:50 p.m.
