College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes
March 23, 2006
Present: Bob Becker (chair), Erik Bucy, Roger Levesque, Al Ruesink (recorder), and Rick Van Kooten. (No, the women weren't boycotting; they were either ill or had other commitments.)
The meeting convened at 4:15.
Dean Catherine Larson joined us to discuss the most recent proposal for
a General Education requirement for the Bloomington campus. Quite
different from previous versions, it will both benefit students and apparently create minimal dislocations in course offerings or school curricula. The College CUE (Committee on Undergraduate Education) has studied it and likes this version better. Being developed by the Educational Policy Committee (chaired by John Carini and Bill Wheeler) of the Bloomington Faculty Council, it is scheduled for a first reading in BFC on April 4 and final consideration on April 18. It can be
accessed via Oncourse. (Faculty, you may contact Al at
ruesink@indiana.edu for details about doing that.) Dean Larson left at 4:37.
Erik reported on progress he has made constructing a ballot for the CPC election. There is progress, but it is not yet complete.
Bob read a letter that Judith has sent to Interim Provost McRobbie on our behalf, noting the concern about loss of priority for a Humanities/Classroom building and the apparent lack of progress toward a return to some sort of printed schedule of classes that would benefit students and advisors during their course selection activities. [The printed schedule of classes was published by the IDS on April 5, so that issue is resolved, at least for this fall. Hurrah!] The letter suggests that he meet with us to discuss the matters.
Bob also read a letter that Judith has sent to Lauren Robel, chair of the Dean search committee, urging our continuing involvement in the vetting of final candidates. Her reply indicates that the committee is maintaining its "fast-track" approach to their task and that they share our concern that there be continuing communication during the search so that the candidates receive a common message from the search committee, the CPC, and Interim Provost McRobbie.
At long last the CPC returned to its consideration of organizing the CPC Policy Statements in a better way on our website and reconsidering those which need to be updated. We agreed to ask the College webmaster to organize them by topic, with cross links as are appropriate. (In contrast to the present organization, which is strictly by time of
adoption.) The CPC policy on Awards, Endowed Chairs, and Endowed Professorships that was sent to faculty for comment in December was modified (unanimous agreement) by the addition of a clause suggested by the College Budget Office for inclusion in the section on Uses of Funds stating "and must be within the accepted bounds for University funds."
The meeting adjourned at 5:37.
Albert Ruesink, recorder
