College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes
March 21, 2005
Present: Rob Shakespeare (chair), Judith Anderson, Erik Bucy, Katy Fraser, Jeff Hart, Roger Levesque, Al Ruesink (recorder), Pam Walters, Yasuko Watt
The meeting convened at 2:30.
Minutes from March 7th were approved after being slightly amended.
Erik led a discussion of the interviews his subcommittee is holding to evaluate the proposal for a Department of Second Language Studies.
Associate Dean Catherine Larson joined us at 2:43 for a discussion of the curricular aspects of the Memorandum of Understanding being considered to govern the move of Computer Science to the School of Informatics. Two minor suggestions in wording were made to clarify and solidify the intention of the document. The B.A. in Computer Science and the Minor in Computer Science will remain in the College while the B.S. will move to Informatics. Courses for the B.A. in Computer Science will be handled in a way similar to the way that the College handles courses for the B.A. in Music.
After Dean Larson left about 3:30, it was moved, seconded, and carried (no dissenting votes; one abstention due to no involvement in prior
discussions) to approve the Memorandum of Understanding Regarding the Transition of the Computer Science Department into the School of Informatics, given only our request for the two minor clarifications previously noted.
Katy sought our advice regarding names of College Faculty who would be good candidates for the CPC election. We hope that the minutes of March 7th (to be distributed March 22) will elicit additional names of excellent candidates.
Near the end of the meeting we considered work yet to be concluded this semester and talked a bit about the upcoming visit next week from Julie Bobay, chair of the Campus Intersections Committee.
The meeting adjourned at 4:09.
Albert Ruesink, recorder
