College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes
February 23, 2006
Present: Bob Becker (chair), Judith Anderson, Erik Bucy (after 4:55), Sandra Dolby, Roger Levesque, Rosemary Lloyd, Al Ruesink (recorder), and Rob Shakespeare.
The meeting convened at 4:15.
Minutes of the Feb. 16th meeting were approved following a minor punctuation change.
The CPC received a copy of a statement of Impact and Transition Issues relating to the formation of the new Statistics Department, a statement prepared for the Dean by the Math Department.
After some discussion, we concluded that we would let stand as an administrative policy the guidelines for recusal that Swamy has offered for members of the College Promotion and Tenure Advisory Committees.
Associate Dean Catherine Larson joined us at 4:30. First she briefed us on the recent work of the classroom scheduling task force. Then she spent most of her time leading a discussion of the present status of the development of system-wide and campus-wide general education guidelines. We paid particular attention to student well-being and to the probable impact on the teaching activities of the College. The document being discussed in the Educational Policy Committee of the Bloomington Faculty Council is Circular B21-2006 and can be accessed in its 12-page format at www.indiana.edu/~bfc/docs/AY06/circulars/B21-2006.htm .
At 5:01 there was a tag-team handoff and transition team leader David Zaret replaced Dean Larson. David, happy to be back in the College offices, described his tasks as he perceives them and his charge from Interim Provost McRobbie. He will be selecting additional members of the transition team because both Joe Steinmetz and Claude Clegg will be leaving their associate deanships at the end of the semester. Two challenges now faced are a) making the transitions as seamless as possible, and b) seeing that commitments made to the College don't fall through the cracks. David believes that the college budget will be in balance at the end of this year and noted that budget construction for next year will be tight. It is still too early to know if raiding of IUB College faculty by other institutions this year will occur at the same high levels as last year. A range of challenges and opportunities for the College were discussed. It appears that things in the College are basically sound and stable and that the transition is going reasonably well. David left at 5:48.
For a few minutes, the CPC considered likely candidates to replace Dean Steinmetz as Executive Associate Dean on the transition team and noted some issues that person will face. [O.K. It's official now--Bob Becker--so we can tell you that Bob confided that he was being considered.]
Bob noted that the upcoming College Chairs and Directors meeting will be just one hour long and will be devoted to a conversation with the Dean Search Committee.
The meeting adjourned at 5:59.
Albert Ruesink, recorder
