College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes
February 16, 2006
Present: Bob Becker (chair), Erik Bucy, Sandra Dolby, Roger Levesque, and Al Ruesink (recorder).
The meeting convened at 4:15.
Minutes of the Feb. 9th and Feb. 10th meetings of the CPC were approved following minor amending of the latter.
Some time was devoted to considering the two meetings of last week (with the Dean Search Committee and with Kevin Hunt from the BFC Agenda
Committee) to be sure that we had similar interpretations of what we heard.
At 4:30 we were joined by Dean Subbaswamy. Planning is moving along for the new Department of Statistics that should emerge on July 1st.
Several present faculty will be joining the Department from their College departments and lots of applications have been received for some new lines.
David Zaret will be leading the transition team of the College for the rest of this semester. He will attend all College planning meetings with departments.
Swamy briefed us on how he is preparing for the campus budget conference of the College, which occurs March 8th. College requests will be tied tightly to President Herbert's stated goals for this campus, taken from his last State of the University talk and elsewhere.
Swamy left our meeting at 5:00.
Erik led a discussion of the nominations that have been received for
the CPC elections. The shape of the ballot began to emerge as we
considered individuals to be asked first if they would stand for
election. Because 4 of the 5 continuing members are women, this
ballot will be rather heavily weighted toward men.
The website of the CPC will soon be upgraded, and we considered the
best way to present official CPC policy statements. Presently we feel
it would be better to group them by topic rather than by leaving them in chronological order.
We discussed the question of our attendance at the upcoming planning meetings of our deans (and David Zaret) with various departments, and we decided that we would send a representative of CPC to as many of them as possible. Initial assignments of CPC members to planning meetings were made.
At future meetings we expect to talk with Associate Dean Catherine Larson about General Education issues and with Transition Leader David Zaret about College administration issues.
The meeting adjourned at 5:45.
Albert Ruesink, recorder
