College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

January 31, 2005

Present: Rob Shakespeare (chair), Judith Anderson, Erik Bucy, Katy Fraser, Jeff Hart, Roger Levesque, Chuck Livingston, Al Ruesink (recorder)

The meeting convened at 2:30.

Minutes of the meeting of January 24th were approved.v Rob updated us on some continuing issues:

1. He has received a summary of the faculty survey results obtained for the performance review of Dean Swamy. The CPC will discuss them after looking them over more carefully.

2. Some budget data have been obtained for the potential transfer of Computer Science into the School of Informatics. Several questions of interpretation of the data remain and we hope to get those clarified.v There was an extended discussion of a proposal to establish a Senior Faculty Recognition Committee that would review the CV's and annual reports of all full professors in the College once every three years for the sole purpose of identifying faculty who would be likely candidates for receiving awards, for appointments to College and campus committees, and for being named to academic chairs. The CPC will consider a further modified version of the proposal at our next meeting.

Dean Zaret is providing the CPC with copies of all salary policies that exist for units in the College. These will be reviewed in the context of the ongoing discussion of College salary policies.

The College has received a proposal dated Jan. 26, 2005 for the restructuring of the Department of TESOL/Applied Linguistics into a Department of Second Language Studies. The CPC began its consideration of the contents of that document. In the near future we plan to talk directly with faculty members and administrators who can be most helpful to us as we draft a response to the proposal.

The meeting adjourned at 4:00.

Albert Ruesink, recorder
