College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

January 19, 2006

Present: Judith Anderson (chair), Bob Becker, Erik Bucy, Sandra Dolby, Roger Levesque, Al Ruesink (recorder), Rob Shakespeare, and Rick Van Kooten.

The meeting convened at 4:15.

Minutes of the meeting of January 12 were approved following some minor amending.

Two members of the CPC volunteered to attend each of the upcoming meetings of the College Chairs and Directors.

Judith reported on letters regarding the future deanship of the College that she had already sent on behalf of the CPC to Ken Gros Louis and Michael McRobbie. McRobbie, incoming Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Bloomington, has asked to meet with the CPC and is scheduled to do so on Jan. 26.

Dean Swamy joined us at 4:30. Most of his visit was devoted to trying to understand the newly emerging structure of the administration of IUB, with an emphasis on the implications for the College. Swamy feels strongly that an additional Associate Dean should be added to the College staff, perhaps a dean for interdisciplinary programs. The College has 26 such units in addition to about 40 departments. The CPC quizzed Swamy regarding his sense of the characteristics that a new Dean of the College should possess. As part of the discussion Swamy noted that we really should be thinking about a pair of administrative positions, because the Executive Associate Dean must also be replaced. Swamy left the meeting at 5:10.

In June, there will be several vacancies on the CPC, both because of the expiration of some terms and because one member is leaving the CPC to become a department chair. Erik Bucy agreed to chair the effort to nominate and then elect new members prior to that time. We encourage College faculty to send him suggestions for candidates (ebucy@indiana.edu). There will be vacancies in all three general areas: sciences/mathematics, social sciences, humanities. Receiving just the suggested names would be fine, but a sentence or two justifying the recommendation would be even more helpful.

The CPC discussed which issues might be most important to raise with Provost McRobbie on the 26th and pondered how to make it highly valuable for all concerned.

The meeting adjourned at 5:42.

Albert Ruesink, recorder
