The purpose of this course is to give a basic knowledge of Chaghatay, the classical version of Uzbek and the common literary language of all Central Asian Turks from the 15th to the early 20th century. The course includes a survey of Chaghatay literature and the study of grammar and the writing system, together with readings from Chaghatay texts, chiefly of historical content.
Textbook: Students are strongly encouraged to obtain a copy of Eckmann, Chagatay Manual, The Hague: Mouton, l966 (Indiana University Publications, Uralic and Altaic Series, Vol. 60).
Texts and Readings: Reading selections will be handed out in class; selections will be drawn from the printed texts of various published works (the Babur-namah, Abu'l-Ghazi's Shajara-i Tarakima and Shajara-i Turk, etc.), as well as from copies of manuscripts of these and other works.
Prerequisites: Knowledge of one modern Turkic language is required (U453-U454 may satisfy this requirement; otherwise instructor's permission is necessary). An acquaintance with Persian is desirable.
Grades: Grades will be based on class performance.
