Since its inauguration in 1994, the Central Eurasian Studies Conference has attracted distinguished professors, independent scholars, and graduate students from around the USA and abroad. The conference is a forum for established scholars to present new research and for graduate students to gain experience presenting papers before a scholarly audience. All papers are normally presented in English (on rare occasions, however, a translator may be found for non-English speakers among other conference participants). The conference does not have a single, specific theme.  This event is completely organized by the Association of the Central Eurasian Students (ACES). In past years we have received generous support from many sources to implement this ambitious project including the Department of Central Eurasian Studies (especially Karen Niggle and April Younger), Inner Asian Uralic National Resource Center (IAUNRC), Office of International Programs, Commitment to Assist Student Initiatives (CASI), College of Arts and Sciences, and many others.

ACES (the Association of Central Eurasian Students) is devoted to providing a forum for Indiana University students interested in and/or studying any region within Central Eurasia. Central Eurasia is defined as the vast area and peoples of:

• The Mongolian plateau (Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, southern Siberia, Kalmyks)
• The Tibetan plateau and the Himalayas (Tibet, Ladakh, Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim
• The oases of Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uighurs)
• The Steppe Turks (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tatars, Bashkirs)
• Afghanistan and Iran
• Turkey and Azerbaijan
• The Finno-Ugric peoples (Hungary, Finland, Estonia)

ACES liaises between the students and Department of Central Eurasian Studies; establishes a forum to gain experience in organizing an international conference, and establish contacts with colleagues who share your interests. ACES is involved in a variety of important activities each year, including organizing an annual CES Conference and related activities every spring; representing graduate student interests to departmental faculty, regional centers on campus and the University; and planning social events.
